Description

Knini Paati River Resort is a retreat located in the Sipaliwini district, approximately 200km from Paramaribo— a three-hour drive and a short boat ride from the capital. Situated in the Ferulasi Sula, it’s a two-part island founded by descendants of escaped slaves who established the village of Knini Paati.

The story of Knini Paati began in 2011 when Nelson Tiapoe, the resort’s manager and host, decided to create a getaway with four camps, a communal area, and a kitchen. However, his dream was to build a luxury resort in the Surinamese jungle. In 2015, he started construction on the new section, transforming it into the upscale retreat it is today. Notably, Knini Paati is the only luxury resort in the area entirely owned by local residents. Nelson Tiapoe expresses pride in being the only resort in the upper Suriname region offering such facilities. The goal is to continually distinguish themselves, providing guests with a luxurious experience in the hinterland. The resort, surrounded by comfortable lodges, allows guests to enjoy the flora and fauna, immerse themselves in local culture, or relax in the refreshing rapids.

Moreover, the resort includes a jungle camp along the Lokotikreek, accessible by boat or a two-and-a-half-hour hike. Here, guests have the opportunity to experience traditional accommodation—sleeping in hammocks, bathing in the river, and cooking over a homemade wood fire after enjoying the luxury of the main resort.

Respecting nature and culture is integral to the resort’s operation. Solar panels are used to minimize environmental impact, and all staff members come from nearby villages, promoting knowledge transfer and preservation. The resident ravens, Lara and Rio, coexist harmoniously with the employees and are beloved by guests.

Knini Paati River Resort collaborates with the Children of Nieuw Aurora Foundation, donating SRD 50 from each guest’s payment. A visit to Knini Paati has a positive ripple effect in the surrounding area.

Knini Paati is truly worth exploring – a place where the beauty of contrasts converges.
