Description

Frederiksdorp is an atmospheric plantation resort at the heart of the Commewijne River with its own Museum and educational slavery trail. The area is rich in history, culture & nature with surrounding plantations, fishing villages, museums, wild beaches, mangrove forests, wetlands, bird swamps, dolphins and sea turtles.

At Frederiksdorp, you have the opportunity to explore the North Commewijne Story Museum, situated in the historic director’s house of Plantation Frederiksdorp, dating back to 1760. This museum showcases a collection of untold personal stories from both older and younger residents of the district in a distinctive, interactive, and vibrant manner. Many of these stories have been documented and can be experienced either through museum exhibits or by using your phone.

For enthusiasts of history and adventure, there’s an educational and interactive history trail through the forest. This trail recounts the life of Boni, the renowned 18th-century freedom fighter who opposed the colonial regime. The Boni Trail narrates the tales of Surinamese heroes during the plantation’s tumultuous past, focusing not on a narrative of victimhood but on the struggle against slavery.
